First Communion Faith Milestone

Our First Communion Faith Milestone is designed to prepare children in Kindergarten – 4th grade to receive the sacrament of Holy Communion in a developmentally appropriate and meaningful way. This milestone is just the beginning of learning about this sacrament.

What is included in the First Communion Faith Milestone?

In order to assist parents in preparing their children to receive the gift of God’s grace that is given in communion we support parents with:

  • A series of three online workshops for the child and parents

  • At-home resources with a guide for continued learning, videos, and family activities led by parents at home

  • Dessert reception to celebrate this milestone and rehearse for First Communion Sunday

How do I know if my child is ready to receive Holy Communion?
Important cues that may indicate readiness are your child showing signs of feeling excluded and asking questions about Communion. Martin Luther said that what is required is a “believing” and “trusting” heart that the sacrament is “for you” and for “the forgiveness of sins.” Children can often be more believing and trusting than adults. The decision regarding your child’s First Communion readiness will be left up to each family and is best determined by you. All children will not be ready at the same time. Each child is different, and each will pick up on the significance of the meal at a different time.

If you determine your child is ready to receive the sacrament of Holy Communion, begin having conversations at home and register your child for the First Communion Faith Milestone. See the important dates for workshops and First Communion Sunday below. If you have any questions or would like to discuss First Communion, please contact Robin Patras.

Older children who have not yet had formal preparation for this sacrament and are interested in receiving Holy Communion may contact Pastor Todd Lotridge, to learn more about options for older students.
